"Samuel Wilbert Tucker: The Story of a Civil Rights Trailblazer and the 1939 Alexandria Library Sit-In" by Nancy Noyes Silcox ($20.00)
First-ever biography of African American civil rights lawyer Samuel W. Tucker (1913-1990), who organized a 1939 sit-in at the Alexandria Public Library in Alexandria, Virginia, to protest that city’s “whites-only” policy. Born and raised in Alexandria during the time of Jim Crow, Tucker, a faithful member of Zion Baptist Church attended segregated schools, graduated from Howard University, passed the Virginia Bar exam at age 20, served overseas during World War II, then came home to fight for equal rights. He spent decades challenging public school segregation in Virginia courts and the U.S. Supreme Court.
When interviewed towards the end of his life, this soft-spoken yet determined man said, “We’ve got to keep our story told.”
Please feel free to contact the church office at info@zion-baptist-church.org or call (703) 836-0246, if you would like to purchase the book. We look forward to hearing from you.
